Fighting Cacti Secure Best Women’s Record in School History with Dominant Sophomore Night Win
History was made inside the Bell Center Wednesday night as the Copper Mountain College women's basketball team secured the best record in program history with a dominant victory over Barstow College.
On a night dedicated to honoring the sophomores and their two years of dedication to the program, the entire team took the floor determined to leave no doubt. From the opening tip, the Fighting Cacti showcased the intensity, unity, and identity that has defined their historic season.
Copper Mountain suffocated Barstow defensively, holding the Vikings to just 14 points in the first half. The Cacti never looked back.
CMC unleashed its trademark "Monster" press early and often, relentlessly forcing turnover after turnover. The defensive pressure fueled the offense, leading to layup after layup in transition and creating an avalanche of momentum that Barstow could not withstand.
Offensively, the Cacti delivered a performance for the record books. Zoe Tennell erupted for 49 points in a spectacular scoring display, while Gia McFadden added 30 points to power the attack. Sophomore Jayla Speakman contributed 14 points, and fellow sophomore Mailana Mattos added 11, making Sophomore Night one to remember.
While the individual numbers were impressive, the victory was a reflection of the team's collective commitment on both ends of the floor. The defensive intensity, unselfish play, and relentless pace have become hallmarks of a program that continues to raise the standard.
With the win, the Fighting Cacti officially clinch the best women's basketball record in school history—an achievement that speaks to the growth, culture, and belief within the program.
Copper Mountain will now await Sunday's 3C2A playoff selections to find out where they will compete as postseason play begins next week.
