No. 10 CMC Women Roll Past College of the Desert, 91–61
The Copper Mountain College women's basketball team continued its dominant run through the Inland Empire Conference with an emphatic 91–61 victory over College of the Desert on Saturday, further cementing its place among the state's elite.
The No. 10 state-ranked Fighting Cacti showed exactly why they deserve their lofty ranking—and perhaps even more—as they overwhelmed the Roadrunners with relentless energy, depth, and togetherness on both ends of the floor. Copper Mountain's performance was a clear example of what a team with talent and conviction can accomplish when it plays connected basketball for 40 minutes.
CMC's signature "Monster" press set the tone early, frustrating and speeding up the Roadrunners into rushed shots and costly turnovers. Those defensive stops quickly turned into transition opportunities, allowing the Cacti to build a commanding 41–29 lead by halftime.
The pressure only intensified to start the second half. Copper Mountain opened the third quarter on a surge, pushing the lead to 20 early and never looking back as the Cacti continued to dictate tempo and control the game.
Gia McFadden led the offensive attack with a dominant 31-point performance, while Zoe Tennell added 22 points of her own. Jayla Speakman continued to showcase her presence on the glass, controlling the boards while also contributing 11 points in a well-rounded effort.
With the win, Copper Mountain keeps its sights firmly set on a conference title and a run toward a state championship. The Fighting Cacti will now hit the road for a highly anticipated matchup, traveling to face No. 14-ranked Mt. San Jacinto in a battle for first place in the IEAC on Wednesday, January 28, at 5:00 p.m.
